Graphics Reporters

The Washington Post is looking for curious, energetic and creative visual journalists to join its award-winning Graphics team. These graphics reporters will focus on visualizing news stories through maps, diagrams, charts and other creative story forms.

If you are the right person for this job:

  • You have a strong portfolio that is full of original, beautifully designed and intuitive visual stories
  • You have lots of ideas
  • You’ve conceived, designed and built elegant standalone information graphics on a variety of deadlines
  • You want to do ambitious work and are flexible
  • Design and build projects in collaboration with the team

The Post is a highly collaborative, creative environment, so the ability to work well with others and give and take feedback is highly valued.

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Skilled in graphics reporting, with a nuanced understanding of how to evaluate sources, work with complex data and tell stories through meaningful visualization
  • You’re invested in finding ways to help your work reach as many people as possible, knowing that visuals have the incredible power to communicate quickly and effectively in an increasingly image-driven media landscape
  • 2+ years of experience in management of projects and/or staff and the desire to be a player-coach who leads through example

You should be comfortable in visual design programs like Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as with front-end development and data analysis (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, QGIS). These positions will require occasional night and weekend shifts.

1Graphics developer

The Washington Post looking for a curious, energetic and creative developer to join our award-winning Graphics team. This graphics developer will focus on pitching and producing stories using the latest technologies, and experimenting with new narrative formats.

The right person for this job has a strong portfolio that is full of innovative, original projects. We want someone who has a lot of ideas, who is always looking for new ways to tell stories and who is ambitious and flexible. This is a highly collaborative, creative environment, so the ability to work well with others and give and take feedback is highly valued.

The ideal candidate is an experienced coder and a good designer, has a track record of learning new languages and a demonstrated proficiency with the latest developments in visual storytelling. The ability to build projects in augmented reality and a desire to learn whatever technologies might come next are essential. Strong JavaScript skills and experience with 3D programming are essential. Familiarity with React or similar frameworks is a bonus.
