A man broke into the Colorado Supreme Court building early Tuesday where he fired a pistol multiple times and started a fire in a stairwell,<b> </b>Denver police said.

No one was injured in the incident, which started after 1:15 a.m., according to police. The Colorado State Patrol said in a statement that the gunman caused “significant and extensive damage” to the building, which was closed Tuesday.

Authorities said the incident does not appear to be related to recent threats facing Colorado’s justices after <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/donald-trump/" target="_blank" class="contextual_link">Donald Trump</a> was <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/12/19/trump-off-colorado-ballot/" target=_blank>barred from appearing</a> on the state’s 2024 presidential primary ballot. Within days of the decision, law enforcement officials were investigating a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/12/22/law-enforcement-colorado-justices-threats/" target=_blank>spike in threats</a> against the state’s Supreme Court justices.

A man police identified as Brandon Olsen, 44, fled the scene of a car crash that happened near the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center around 1:15 a.m. He later shot through a window, entered the building, and forcefully retrieved keys to other floors from an unarmed security guard, officials said.

The man pointed the pistol at the security guard before taking his keys and going to the seventh floor, where he fired several shots, according to a probable cause document. Police said the man also started a fire in a stairwell that was later extinguished by the Denver Fire Department.

He surrendered around 3 a.m. and was arrested on charges of robbery, burglary and arson, police said in a news release.

Officials did not provide further details on the car crash or who owned the weapon that was fired.

Another person who works in the Colorado Supreme Court building told police she was inside Tuesday, but had left after hearing the fire alarm. She did not see a gunman or anyone else in the building, according to the probable cause statement.

Officers who searched the building after the incident said they found a semiautomatic pistol inside a conference room.

The seventh floor smelled of smoke and sprinklers that had gone off when the fire was started left standing water in the building, police reported. Burnt documents were found in the building and at least two windows on the seventh floor were damaged by bullets, according to the report.
