Wisconsin Republicans received a drubbing in April when progressive Judge Janet Protasiewicz won the election to fill the swing seat on the state Supreme Court, giving progressives a 4-3 majority. Republicans’ loss by 11 points — a virtual landslide in the evenly divided swing state — should have curbed their appetite for radical gerrymandering and a 19th-century abortion ban, both of which were front and center in the race. Now, however, Republicans threaten to countermand the voters’ choice and send the state toward a constitutional standoff.
