Julie Garwood, a prolific and best-selling author of stories of romance and intrigue with settings that ranged from a medieval English castle under siege to the Louisiana bayou in a modern-day murder mystery, died June 8 at her home in Leawood, Kan. She was 78.

A family statement announced the death. Ms. Garwood had been treated for lung cancer.
