BUFFALO — Pearl Young volunteered every weekend at her church’s food pantry. Ruth Whitfield had just spent the day at a nursing home caring for her husband. And Andre Mackniel had popped into the grocery store to get a birthday cake for his son.

None of them escaped Tops supermarket in Buffalo on Saturday afternoon when a gunman in tactical gear opened fire on shoppers and employees, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/15/buffalo-shooting-victims/">The Washington Post reported</a>. On Sunday, police identified them as three of the 10 victims killed during the massacre.

The seven others who were killed: Roberta Drury, Margus Morrison, Aaron Salter, Geraldine Talley, Celestine Chaney, Heyward Patterson and Katherine Massey. Three more were injured.

What we know about the victims of the Buffalo grocery store shooting

Payton Gendron of Conklin, N.Y., has been charged with and pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Last year, law enforcement officials investigated a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/15/buffalo-shooting-tops-grocery/" target="_blank">shooting threat made by the 18-year-old</a> now accused of carrying out a racially motivated massacre at the Buffalo supermarket, authorities said Sunday.

Federal authorities are investigating the shooting as a hate crime and may file civil rights charges on top of the state murder case. Two people close to the investigation, who spoke to The Post on the condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to talk publicly, said investigators think Gendron wrote a 180-page document that outlined the motivation for his attack. In the diatribe, he allegedly identifies as a white supremacist and a terrorist.

The suspected Buffalo grocery store gunman <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/16/buffalo-shooting-live-updates/#link-RF6OES2XG5G6RBXRCPKXIYD45A" target=_blank>apparently planned to continue his attack</a> after opening fire at that market, the city’s police commissioner said in media interviews Monday.

The Buffalo Police Department released the names of the 13 victims late Sunday. The <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/15/buffalo-shooting-victims/" target=_blank>10 people who were killed</a> ranged in age from 32 to 86, while the three who were hurt are 20, 50 and 55.

Eleven of the 13 people shot were Black, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/15/buffalo-shooting-victims/">The Post reported</a>.

A 19-year-old resident of Conklin, N.Y., who described himself as Payton Gendron’s close friend since elementary school said Gendron kept cans of ammunition and three weapons under his bed: a 30-06 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a semiautomatic rifle that, he said, matched the description of the weapon used in the mass shooting at the Buffalo supermarket.

“He loved his family, but he would get annoyed sometimes, like when his mom would tell him to get rid of the ammo and guns,” the friend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was afraid of becoming a target, said in a telephone interview with The Washington Post. “He wished he could buy whatever he wanted. He wanted to buy more. He wanted to have free will.”

The friend said Gendron had been fascinated with guns since ninth grade and would watch YouTube videos about how they functioned. He recalled Gendron bringing the semiautomatic weapon over to his home in January soon after he purchased it.

“He couldn’t believe he found one that was so historically accurate. like the same as the old M16s supplied by the military,” he said, adding that Gendron told him he had spent about $1,000 that he had earned working at a convenience store. “I wasn’t really concerned because a lot of people around here have guns. He said he got them for target practice and hunting.”

The last time they saw each other was two weeks ago, the friend said, when they went to a flea market in nearby Binghamton. Gendron talked to a vendor who was selling ammunition and hand guards but didn’t buy anything.

The friend said he and Gendron have talked less frequently in the last two years because of the pandemic. They did hang out once or twice a week for a few months starting in the fall of 2021, as Gendron said he was having trouble making friends at SUNY Broome Community College. The school confirmed that Gendron was enrolled as a full-time student in the fall of 2021 and the spring of 2022 semesters.

Gendron was a smart, quiet person who said “yes, ma’am” and held doors open for people, the friend said. He never saw him be violent or even get angry.

“Everything I may have known about him may have been a lie,” he said. “It just doesn’t make sense.”

BUFFALO — A taxi driver said that he had seen someone who resembles the suspect in custody at least twice leading up to the deadly attack at Tops Friendly Markets.

The driver’s account suggests that the alleged attacker had been planning out his killing, as a document obtained by The <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2022/05/16/buffalo-shooting-previous-supermarket-confrontation/?itid=hp-top-table-main&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_19&itid=lk_inline_manual_23">Washington Post</a> suggests. The document refers to the supermarket as “attack area 1” and describes two more Buffalo locations as other attack areas to “shoot all blacks.”

Police have arrested and charged Payton Gendron, 18, with first-degree murder in the attack. He is being held without bail and has pleaded not guilty. Authorities believe the shooter was motivated by baseless, racist theories and online posts.

Jitney driver Anthony Marshall, who drives a minibus around the neighborhood to shuttle customers to the store, told The Washington Post that he saw a man who looked like Gendron between 10 a.m. and noon on Friday. That was the same time a store employee saw someone matching Gendron’s description driving around the Tops store parking lot.

After Gendron was allegedly kicked out of Tops for “begging for money,” Marshall said he saw the man again in the grocery store’s parking lot between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The man was later seen eating McDonald’s takeout in his car near the store.

“I’m hearing these shots so me and the people next door, we started heading that way. They hollered at me and they say, ‘Mr. Tony, it’s Tops!’” he said.

BUFFALO — The Rev. Julian Cook was on his way home from celebrating graduation day at Houghton College in South Buffalo when his students started receiving frantic calls.

“When you go back home, avoid Jefferson Avenue,” they told him. “There’s a shooting at Tops.”

Inside the lunch room at Makowski Early Childhood Education Center, families had already gathered with law enforcement officials and other members of clergy at the reunification center for shooting survivors and their loved ones. Williams arrived shortly afterward, vowing to stay until building services workers locked the school up later that night, whenever it would be.

“Just pray,” the Rev. Denise Walden told families as they walked into the building. And they did.

Every few minutes, Cook said, a family member would get good news — their relative was accounted for — or devastating news — they were shot dead or seriously wounded.

“It was the most devastating place I’ve ever been,” he said. “And it looks like school could have happened yesterday.”

Word soon started to trickle in — through calls or text messages from other witnesses and snippets of overheard conversation from police — that the gunman at the grocery store was White. The Tops market is the only grocery store in much of East Buffalo, where the Black population is concentrated. It’s the place where some people pay their monthly bills. It’s the only major pharmacy for miles.

As more families came into the school lunch room, Cook was tapped to run an impromptu shuttle service for survivors back to the grocery store to pick up their cars. After families’ nerves had started to settle, they loaded group by group into his Lincoln Continental for the quick drive back. Cook played soft classical music and grabbed extra tissues. He stayed in the lunch room close to midnight after the last family to come to the school had calmed down enough to return home after learning their loved one was killed.

“What impacted me was that these people who had been through this incredibly hurtful experience were so grateful,” Cook said. “They’re thanking me that I’ve come to provide a ride, and they just had the worst experience of their lives to date, probably.”

The head of the FBI on Monday called the Buffalo shooting “racially motivated violent extremism,” pledging that the bureau would thoroughly investigate the rampage.

“I want to be clear, for my part, from everything we know, this was a targeted attack, a hate crime, and an act of racially motivated violent extremism,” FBI Director Christopher A. Wray said during a conference call Monday, according to the bureau. “While there remain a lot of unknowns as there always do in an investigation at this stage, what is absolutely certain is that we at the FBI are committed to comprehensively and aggressively investigating Saturday’s attack.”

FBI leaders conducted the call with local, state and federal law enforcement officials, as well as civil rights leaders and other participants, the bureau said. The FBI released a portion of Wray’s remarks to the media.

His comments came two days after a gunman opened fire at a grocery store in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Buffalo, shooting 13 people and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/15/buffalo-shooting-victims/?itid=hp-top-table-main&itid=lk_inline_manual_44" target="_blank">killing 10 of them</a>. Nearly everyone shot was Black.

Authorities have charged 18-year-old Payton Gendron with the shooting. Investigators believe he posted a racist 180-page screen online labeling himself as a white supremacist. He is facing a state murder charge and additional charges are expected to follow. He is also being investigated for potential federal crimes.

The FBI said it had deployed a wave of resources to investigate the Buffalo shooting. The bureau said it dispatched evidence response teams and technical experts to scour the suspected attacker’s digital devices and social media accounts.

Buffalo police make arrest for copy-cat threats

Authorities in Buffalo said Monday afternoon that the investigation into the shooting rampage would be lengthy, while also confirming that the suspect in the attack, who surrendered to police Saturday, had been in the city months before the shootings.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said during a news conference that investigators had learned that the suspect was in the area in early March, two months before officials say he opened fire at a grocery store in the city, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/15/buffalo-shooting-victims/?itid=lk_inline_manual_50" target="_blank">killing 10 people</a>.

Gramaglia spoke after The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2022/05/16/buffalo-shooting-previous-supermarket-confrontation/?itid=hp-top-table-main&itid=lk_inline_manual_51" target="_blank">published a report</a> discussing an online account in which someone identifying himself as Payton Gendron — whom authorities have charged in connection with Saturday’s rampage — had written about going to the same Tops supermarket in early March for an apparent reconnaissance trip where he was confronted by a security guard.

Gramaglia said that officials had considerable work to do exploring the digital footprint left behind. They have executed some search warrants, he said, with more to come.

Authorities believe the attacker posted a racist 180-page rant online in which he proudly declared himself a white supremacist. The gunman on Saturday attacked a store in a predominantly Black neighborhood, shooting 13 people — nearly all of them Black.

The police commissioner also reiterated comments he made earlier Monday in which he said the attacker had planned to continue shooting people if had he eluded police.

Gramaglia declined to discuss the specific plans, and he did not address how police learned about them. But he said authorities knew the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/16/buffalo-shooting-live-updates/#link-RF6OES2XG5G6RBXRCPKXIYD45A?itid=lk_inline_manual_55" target="_blank">gunman planned to continue</a> unleashing “carnage” beyond that Tops market on Jefferson Avenue.

During the same news conference, Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown decried what he said were social media posts containing potential other threats. District Attorney John J. Flynn for Erie County highlighted a statement his office had released earlier in the day saying that a 52-year-old man was facing a charge of making a terrorist threat.

That man, Flynn’s office said, had called two restaurants and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/16/buffalo-shooting-live-updates/#link-67WPOCIFVBCRBK6A6KVR445B5Q?itid=lk_inline_manual_57" target="_blank">made threatening comments</a> while invoking the grocery store rampage.

In the grocery store case, Flynn said he knew that in the court of public opinion, many think that “there’s so much evidence, it’s overwhelming, this guy did it.”

But Flynn noted that the man in custody has been charged but not convicted, adding that prosecutors have to prove their case in court. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Thursday morning.

Michael Christopher Martin was distraught Sunday afternoon, looking around at a food distribution, blocks from the Tops Friendly Markets, gathering one fruit here, one fruit there, his mind on what was in his pocket.

Crumpled up in his jeans was his last receipt from the grocery store. Listed below the charges for bananas and watermelon slices was the time stamp when the transaction was made: 1:53 p.m. on May 14.

It was about 37 minutes before the gunman stormed the shopping center, killing 10 customers and employees in an alleged attempt to target Black people.

“Another 30 minutes and I would’ve gotten nailed,” he said.

But Martin, 67, was fixated on the words at the very bottom of the receipt: “Thank You, Your Cashier Keyshanti.”

He remembered the cashier for her brand new sneakers, Dr. Martens style. And her pretty smile.

“She was so nice,” he said. “And I walk out and 20 minutes later she’s dead? That’s what’s haunting me.”

He was gripped with horror at the thought that he could have been the last one to talk to her. She was located near the entrance, he said.

Earlier Sunday, he saw a blurry photo on social media from the scene of the shooting that showed the body of a woman on the store floor with what looked like shiny new shoes.

“I’m really traumatized,” he said, putting the receipt back into his pocket. “I just want a sense if this girl made it out, you know.”

On Sunday night, Buffalo police released a list of the victims; the cashier Keyshanti was not among them.

BUFFALO — Keyshanti Atkinson picked up a job as a cashier at Tops Friendly Markets three months ago. She loved it immediately.

The East Side of Buffalo, where the majority of the city’s Black population lives, is tightknit. It’s the smallest a place can be while still being a big city, locals say.

“Wherever you walk, you’ll see an uncle or somebody you know from school,” said Atkinson, 19.

And that was true at the supermarket, too. She knew almost everyone in her checkout line — or at least knew of them through friends or family. Tops is the only supermarket on the East Side. It’s the only pharmacy. It’s where some residents pay their monthly bills.

Atkinson agreed on Friday afternoon to pick up a co-worker’s shift at the grocery store for the weekend. She arrived to work around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Her shift was scheduled to end at 7 that night. She stationed herself at Cash Register No. 2 on the left side of the store.

A few minutes into her shift, she said, something felt ominous. Her boyfriend and their 10-month-old son were going to come to Tops later that afternoon for groceries and to pay her a visit. Suddenly, she didn’t want them to come, she said.

“I just kept telling myself: ‘I’m going to stick it out to the end of the day. Nothing’s going to happen.’”

Around 2:30 p.m., she heard the first shots fired outside the store. She figured it was an argument; gun violence is not uncommon in the neighborhood, residents lament. Then a gunman blasted through a window. Chaos erupted.

Customers ran trying to find an exit or a place to hide. Atkinson’s closest exit was the store’s main entrance. The shooter, dressed in camouflage fatigues and body armor, stood between her and the doors.

She sprinted down the aisles to her left toward the managers’ office.

“We were falling all over each other,” she said. “The gunshots sounded like they were getting closer and closer.”

She ran into a conference room with a handful of other employees. One co-worker slammed and locked the door, pushed a table up against it and leaned on the barricade with all his strength.

She reached for her phone to tell her boyfriend not to come to the store with their child — but she had left it at her checkout station. There was no way to warn them to stay away.

“I was having a panic attack when I was in the conference room,” Atkinson said. “I didn’t know if this was the last time I would see my son.”

Close to 10 minutes later, a co-worker banged on the outside of the conference room door to say it was safe to evacuate. But the people inside didn’t believe her.

A police officer came moments later and led them out of the room. Three more officers poured down the aisles toward them with their guns drawn.

The officers screamed for them to sprint out the back entrance.

And when the employees arrived at the door, more officers told them to come out with their hands up, in case the shooter was trying to blend in with the crowd.

Atkinson saw two women on their way home from church choir practice as they drove westbound on Riley Street next to the grocery store. She recognized them from her checkout counter and countless previous meetings.

“Excuse me,” she said as they pulled up. “Are you guys able to take me home? I need to make sure my baby is at my house. I just want to make sure that my baby is safe.”

When she arrived home, she scooped up her son but nearly fell over. She spilled over on the couch and held him closer.

She told her partner she didn’t want to talk about what happened at the store. She didn’t want to take a walk or drink a glass of water.

“I just want to hold my son,” she told her boyfriend.

Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) directly accused Fox News and host Tucker Carlson of fomenting hate in the nation by “spewing” the “poison” of the racist “<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2022/05/15/great-replacement-theory-buffalo-bilbo/?itid=lk_inline_manual_37&itid=lk_inline_manual_102">great replacement theory</a>.”

Schumer, in a Senate floor speech, also accused Republicans, who adhere to former president Donald Trump’s philosophy, of spreading this dangerous rhetoric, which appears to have inspired the alleged Buffalo shooter.

Schumer said that “hard-right MAGA Republicans” are arguing “that people of color and minority communities are somehow posing a threat … to the American way of life.”

“Not long ago, views like replacement theory were only found in the darkest places, in deranged minds,” Schumer said. "[But] replacement theory and other racially motivated views are increasingly coming out into the open, and given purported legitimacy, by some MAGA Republicans and cable news pundits.”

Schumer said it is clear this messaging has found a “special home in several right wing outlets, and on one cable news channel in particular — Fox News.” Specifically, he said, Carlson’s show.

“If organizations like Fox News truly want to condemn this weekend’s violence,” Schumer said, “they need to stop spreading ideas like replacement theory on their shows.”

Schumer will join President Biden, first lady Jill Biden and fellow New York Democrat Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on a visit to Buffalo on Tuesday, where they will meet victims’ families and local officials.

Two months before Payton Gendron allegedly<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/15/buffalo-shooting-victims/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2&itid=lk_inline_manual_111"> killed 10 people </a>at a supermarket in Buffalo, he was confronted by a security guard at the store during a trip on which he compiled detailed plans of the location, according to a document posted online last month by a writer who identified himself as Gendron.

“I’ve seen you go in and out. … What are you doing?” the guard told Gendron on March 8, according to an account in the document. Gendron replied that he was “collecting consensus data” before making excuses and leaving for his car, according to the account. It adds, “In hindsight that was a close call.”

The encounter with the guard at the supermarket was described within a 589-page document posted online on April 29. The document refers to the supermarket as “attack area 1” and describes two more Buffalo locations as other attack areas to “shoot all blacks” during an apparent reconnaissance trip that spelled out the travel paths to each one, timing needed for each shootout and the estimate that more than three dozen people would be fatally shot in all.

The document contains numerous photos of Gendron and uses a handle Gendron used on other social media platforms. The messages contain many images of his activities and reference several events in his personal life, such as a speeding ticket, that The Washington Post has confirmed.

Heyward Patterson, 67, grew up surrounded by a close-knit extended family just blocks from where he was killed. They all called him “Boy Tenny” — a nickname so ingrained that his cousin couldn’t recall its origin.

“I never called him by his government name. He was always Boy Tenny, and I never asked any questions on why,” said 54-year-old Deborah Patterson, laughing. “We just knew he loved us.”

The family has been stunned by the violence inflicted on a community they know so well, she said.

But they were not surprised that Tenny (pronounced “Teeny”) was there. He often drove members of his church to Tops, helped them load their groceries into his car and then took them home. “That’s what he did all the time,” Deborah Patterson said. “That’s what he loved to do.”

He was one of those neighborhood characters that everyone seemed to know, said Yvonda King, who has known him since childhood. “One of the OGs of the ‘hood,’ ” she called him. He was well-dressed, gentlemanly and sprightly — “a real life, down-to-earth man.”

Deborah Patterson said her “big cousin” was a family man. Their fathers were twins, and he was always around growing up. In adulthood, she said, he was a devoted dad.

He loved his church, where he served as a deacon and gained another nickname, “Deac.” He also loved singing.

“Oh my gosh, his voice is like heaven-sent,” Deborah Patterson said. “R&amp;B, church songs — anything. He was great at it. If you were sad and heard him singing, you would definitely have a smile on your face.”

When she first heard of the shooting, she didn’t believe it. A day later, she said she was “still trying to really get a hold of it being true.”

She was trying to find comfort in picturing Tenny helping with groceries in heaven, and in an old Patterson family saying: “We never say ‘Goodbye’ — always, ‘In a minute.’ ”

Crump says ‘replacement theory’ pushers are accomplices in Buffalo shooting

BUFFALO — Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the family of Buffalo shooting victim Ruth Whitfield, called the attack this weekend that killed 10 people at a Tops Friendly Markets store an act of “domestic terrorism.” He urged federal and state law enforcement officials to prosecute the man charged with the shooting, Payton Gendron, as a domestic terrorist.

“What happened on Saturday was an act of domestic terrorism, and we must define it as such,” Crump said Monday during a news conference.

He also vowed legal action against news outlets, politicians and far-right leaders who amplify the racist “<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2022/05/15/great-replacement-theory-buffalo-bilbo/?itid=lk_inline_manual_131" target=_blank>great replacement theory</a>,” which focuses on baseless claims of a plot to replace the White population with immigrants. Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, the No. 3 House Republican,<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/05/15/stefanik-buffalo-replacement/?itid=lk_inline_manual_131" target=_blank> has previously made allegations echoing</a> tenets of the “great replacement theory.”

“It’s these people who are accomplices to this mass murder,” Crump said. “Even if they didn’t pull the trigger, they loaded the gun for this white supremacist.”

Frederick Morrison, 49, was outside enjoying his Saturday when people started talking about a shooting going on at Tops Friendly Markets. It was the grocery store where his older brother Margus D. Morrison, 52, did his regular shopping. When Frederick learned Margus was killed, “I broke down,” he said.

Morrison was a father, husband as well as a school bus aide. Frederick said Morrison liked his job, and described him as a fun, lovable guy with a nice spirit who liked to joke. While the brothers did not actively discuss racism, “we just know it’s there,” Frederick said.

The top prosecutor in Erie County said Monday that a Buffalo man was facing a charge of making a terrorist threat after calling two businesses in the city and making menacing comments while invoking Saturday’s grocery store massacre.

According to the office of District Attorney John J. Flynn, the man made the calls Sunday afternoon, less than 24 hours after a gunman opened fire at a Tops Friendly Markets store, shooting 13 people, nearly all of them Black. <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/15/buffalo-shooting-victims/?itid=hp-top-table-main&itid=lk_inline_manual_140" target="_blank">Ten people were killed</a>, and the suspected gunman surrendered to police.

Flynn’s office said Joseph S. Chowaniec, 52, was arraigned Monday morning on a felony count of making a terrorist threat. It was not immediately clear whether Chowaniec, who faces up to seven years behind bars if convicted, had an attorney.

According to Flynn’s office, the man first called a pizzeria early Sunday afternoon and then, a short time later, called a brewery. In both cases, Flynn’s office said, the man made threatening remarks and “allegedly made a reference” to the grocery store shooting.

“This crime will not be tolerated — especially as we are actively investigating the [grocery store] shooting as a domestic terrorism incident,” Flynn said in a statement.

Chowaniec will be held without bail, Flynn’s office said, “pending the results of a forensic examination.” He is due back in court Friday morning.

President Biden on Monday paid tribute to Aaron Salter Jr., the retired Buffalo police officer who was working as a security guard when the gunman began his deadly barrage inside the supermarket.

“We pay tribute to all law enforcement officers and families who understand what it takes, what’s at risk to save and protect all of us,” Biden said during remarks given during the White House’s Medal of Valor ceremony held for National Police Week. “That includes paying tribute to the Buffalo police officer, Aaron Salter … who gave his life trying to save others when a gunman shot and killed 10 innocent people in a grocery store in Buffalo.”

Biden told the crowd of police officers, other public safety officials and their families that “no one understands more than all of you here today the pain and anguish those families in Buffalo feel.”

“You’re part of a special community … because the firefighters and police officers will always be there for you,” Biden said. “I know it’s a small consolation, but they’ll always be there for you and your family, and your children and your grandchildren.”

Buffalo Supermarket Shooting

The suspected Buffalo grocery store gunman apparently planned to continue his attack after opening fire at that market, the city’s police commissioner said in media interviews Monday.

“It appeared that his plans were to drive out of here and then continue driving down Jefferson Avenue, looking to shoot more Black people, as he put it,” Joseph Gramaglia told <a href="https://twitter.com/GMA/status/1526158850046541836?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1526158850046541836%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=about%3Asrcdoc" target=_blank>ABC News</a>, while standing in front of the grocery store where the shooting took place. “And possibly even go to another store location.”

Authorities have named Payton Gendron, 18, as the shooting suspect, saying that he traveled to Buffalo from his home in Conklin, N.Y., and attacked a busy Tops Friendly Markets store in a predominantly Black neighborhood. Police said the gunman shot 13 people, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/15/buffalo-shooting-victims/?itid=lk_inline_manual_155" target="_blank">killing 10 of them</a>, before surrendering at the scene.

Gramaglia did not elaborate on how police learned about what he described as plans to continue the attack elsewhere. In an interview <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/16/us/buffalo-supermarket-shooting-monday/index.html" target="_blank">with CNN</a>, Gramaglia said authorities had found “evidence” and “some documentation” about these plans to continue the rampage.

The Buffalo police and Gramaglia did not immediately respond to interview requests Monday morning.

Authorities continue to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/15/payton-gendron-buffalo-shooting/?itid=lk_inline_manual_159" target=_blank>investigate the shooting suspect</a>, whom they believed posted a rambling, 180-page rant online in which he proudly labels himself a white supremacist. The shooting suspect faces a state murder charge, and he is also being investigated for possible federal crimes.

Authorities are investigating the slayings as a hate crime and case of racially motivated violent extremism.

It is just the latest example of such a massacre in the United States, where firearms are a bitter partisan political issue. As in other cases, calls for strong gun control measures have followed. After a mass shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colo., in March 2021 that also left 10 people dead, President Biden issued a flurry of executive orders <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/biden-gun-control-actions/2021/04/08/6a4cb1d0-9869-11eb-a6d0-13d207aadb78_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_5&itid=lk_inline_manual_164">designed to curb gun violence</a>.

In the wake of similar mass killings, which are frequent in the United States but have taken place all over the world, many countries have imposed far more ambitious gun-control measures than what courts interpreting the U.S. Constitution would permit.
