Mark Lanegan, the gravel-voiced singer-songwriter who helped pioneer grunge music with his rock band Screaming Trees, then launched a career as a bluesy, introspective solo artist while collaborating with groups including Queens of the Stone Age, died Feb. 22 at his home in Killarney, Ireland. He was 57.

His death was announced in a statement on his Twitter account, which did not cite a cause. Mr. Lanegan had been hospitalized for covid-19 last year and spent weeks in a medically induced coma, an experience he chronicled in a memoir, “Devil in a Coma,” published in December.
