Toko Shinoda, a Japanese artist who worked in the ancient tradition of calligraphy, using ink that was centuries old to produce works that were regarded as gems of modern abstract expressionism, died March 1 at a hospital in Tokyo. She was 107.

Allison Tolman, Ms. Shinoda’s gallerist in the United States, confirmed her death in an email. The cause was not immediately available.
