Pieper Lewis was sleeping in the hallway of an apartment complex when she first encountered the man she would come to think of as her boyfriend. She was 15 years old, on the run from an unstable home life in Des Moines.

He gave her a place to stay and called her his girlfriend. But then, by her account, he started listing her on dating websites. She had been forced into sex with men on seven or eight occasions when, Lewis said in a guilty plea, she killed one of them.
