“Better late than never” is a particularly good motto for anyone who regards the reading of books as an important part of life. E.M. Delafield’s “The Diary of a Provincial Lady” (1930) has never been out of print and is much loved, as are its various sequels, but — hangs head in shame — I was not among its devotees … till now.
