Post Politics Now Garland names special counsel for Trump probes; Jeffries makes House Democratic leader bid

Today, Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed Jack Smith, a longtime federal prosecutor, as special counsel to oversee the criminal investigation into former president Donald Trump’s possible mishandling of classified documents at the Mar-a-Lago Club, where he lives, as well as key aspects of the Jan. 6 investigation. Garland said it was “in the public interest” to appoint a special counsel given that Trump has announced his candidacy for president and President Biden intends to run again in 2024. Smith in recent years has been working at the International Criminal Court at The Hague.
