Your fridge is probably a pretty modern, efficient, carefully engineered machine. But Jiaying Zhao, a behavioral scientist at the University of British Columbia, says it has one glaring flaw.

If you organize your fridge the way its designers intended, you tuck your fruits and vegetables into crisper drawers and place your most perishable items at the back of the bottom shelf where temperatures are coolest. But that makes you more likely to forget about these quick-to-spoil foods until it’s too late.
