Once he got his grip, Isaac Ogunlade knew it was over. He lifted his opponent and threw him to the mat, the thud signifying a sudden-death victory in the Maryland 4A/3A 190-pound championship match.

Ogunlade was one of two Einstein wrestlers to take home a title Saturday during the individual state championships at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro; Stone Yuen won the 126-pound division.

“Winning is the result of wanting to improve,” Titans Coach Oscar Salazar said. “If you just focus every practice on getting a little bit better, everything else will take care of itself. … It all culminated in this one moment.”

Ogunlade, a junior, didn’t start wrestling until ninth grade. He remembers being on this stage last year, amazed by how advanced his opponents were. After finishing sixth, he doubted that winning a state title was possible. After he did so Saturday, beating North Point’s Dominic Queen, 3-1, in the final, Ogunlade crouched behind the black curtains lining the front row of the seating bowl, hands on his head, absorbing his accomplishment.

“I didn’t think I was going to be able to get that far. … I was like, ‘Damn, I’m a champion,’ ” Ogunlade said. “A lot of people can’t say that in this state.”

There was little drama in Yuen’s win, which brought his record to 38-1 — the one loss coming against Saturday’s opponent, Magruder’s Neil Sharma. In a Montgomery County final rematch, Yuen dislocated his shoulder. The brace he continues to don offers a reminder.

“Definitely doesn’t feel great — feels like it’s kind of hanging off — but I got it done,” said Yuen, who posted a 5-0 decision Saturday. “I was just hyped up, man. I lost last year, got second place. That wasn’t happening again.”

Eight other area wrestlers won 4A/3A titles: South River’s Jackson Peeples (106 pounds); Whitman’s Solomon Randall (113); Northern’s Drew Montgomery (138); Clarksburg’s Jonathan Chang (144); Churchill’s Taigh Merola (150); Broadneck’s Austin Combs (165); Bowie’s Jamil Morrow (215) and Old Mill’s RJ Duncan (285). In the 2A/1A competition, Calvert’s Brian Davis won the 138-pound title, and Centennial’s Calvin Kraisser (144) won his third straight state championship.

There were 10 individual champions from the D.C. area in the girls’ competition: Arundel’s Jada Chaves (105); Southern’s Domenica Gladwell (115); Blair’s Mckinley Jovanovic (120); Crofton’s Lexy Pabon (125); Rockville’s Anastasia Dakoulas (130); Laurel’s Alexandra Ford (135); Quince Orchard’s Aubry Spadoni (140); La Plata’s Daisy Rojas (145); Watkins Mill’s Nebi Tsarni (155) and Northern’s Emily Boling (235).
