Dick Butkus, the ferocious body-cruncher of the Chicago Bears defense during the 1960s and early ’70s who awed fans and menaced opposing teams with a smothering intensity that earned him nicknames such as the Monster of the Midway and a place as one of the sport’s greatest middle linebackers, died at his home in Malibu, Calif. He was 80.
