A civil trial in which former president Donald Trump and his company are accused of committing rampant fraud began Monday in a Manhattan courtroom, with a sharp dispute playing out over the property valuations at the center of the case.

New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron, who is presiding over the trial, issued a pretrial decision last week saying that fraud was broadly committed by the Trump Organization and its executives. James (D) is seeking a $250 million financial penalty for Trump and restrictions on his ability to operate a business in New York state.
Engoron, in his decision, revoked Trump’s New York business licenses, which could cause the former president to lose control over dozens of properties worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
James’s office has emphasized in court the gravity of what it said occurred, accusing Trump and his business of committing wrongdoing over many years.
Trump’s legal team has argued that he committed no wrongdoing and insisted that he is being targeted for political reasons.
The trial is not being televised.
