Music from this century doesn’t appeal to Sedona. The LA-based pop artist prefers songs from the 1970s and ’80s, when women-led outfits took to stages in shag cuts, much like hers, to romanticize and castigate love affairs.

“I don’t really connect to the literal frequencies that are coming out of new music,” she says on a Zoom call.

It’s fitting, then, that Sedona, who goes by only that name (“like Madonna,” she says), started her solo project in the bars and nightclubs of New York City, playing her mother’s original songs. For the daughter of a singer and a piano tuner/bassist, singing songs written decades earlier by someone so close felt like resurfacing the “anthems of [her] life.”

That retro style made its way onto Sedona’s EP, “Rearview Angel,” which was released in October 2020. By then, she had rounded out an all-femme five-piece of the same name to bring to life her lush, synthy collection of lovelorn ballads and glitzy, up-tempo tracks about Hollywood’s gilded nature. Her hometown of Los Angeles serves as something of a subliminal backdrop to the songs’ narrative.

“That EP is about your shadow self and how it follows you everywhere,” she says. “You have to learn to make peace with it in order to step out of that shadow. The songs are in an order: experiencing obstacles, loss and overcoming it, and learning how to live within it and beyond it.”

Two years ago, that journey brought her back to LA in a mid-pandemic move that forced her to restart as a solo artist. For her, it’s been lonely.

“Being a solo artist is an amazing thing to learn to love, like learning to love yourself,” she says. “But it’s been hard to steer the ship alone, to figure out how to get the music out there and do it all alone.”

She’s since released singles with styles ranging from twang, like the Americana-infused “No Man’s Land,” to disco, like the pop earworm “Touch and Go.” But Sedona sees a lone element connecting all her music: her voice, which stays consistent, while “everything else that supports it is ever changing.” She cites pop stars like idol Gwen Stefani as her inspiration to take such disparate approaches.

Her new collection of songs, a full-length album called “Getting Into Heaven,” due out this fall, was recorded with a recently assembled West Coast ensemble. For Sedona, the album title works on two levels: It references the quest for eternal bliss, but also the choice to seek out nirvana — whenever possible — in daily life.

“I’m getting into choosing me and protecting my own energy, which I think is the closest thing to heaven on earth,” she says.
