Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah, the starting wingers on the U.S. men’s national soccer team, will miss the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals against Trinidad and Tobago with hamstring injuries.

Both were left off the 24-man U.S. roster, which Coach Gregg Berhalter unveiled Thursday — four days before training camp opens in Austin.

The Americans will host the first leg Nov. 16 in the Texas capital, then visit Port-of-Spain on Nov. 20. The winner will not only advance to the Nations League final four in March but also will clinch a spot in next summer’s Copa America, the eminent South American competition, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/01/27/copa-america-2024-united-states/" target=_blank>which will be held at U.S. venues</a>.

“We have had a core group together for the last two windows in preparation for this opportunity, and we want to finish the year on a strong note and position ourselves to compete in two important competitions next year,” Berhalter said in a statement.

The United States has won each of the first two Nations League titles.

Pulisic and Weah, starters at the World Cup last year, gave exceptional performances in the U.S. team’s most recent friendly, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/10/17/usmnt-ghana-gio-reyna/" target=_blank>a 4-0 romp over Ghana on Oct. 17 in Nashville</a>.

Eleven days later, though, Weah injured a hamstring in Juventus’s Serie A match against Verona and hasn’t played since. Pulisic, who has scored five goals in his past five U.S. appearances, limped off Tuesday in stoppage time of AC Milan’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain.

Their absences leave a gaping void on the U.S. wings. Candidates to fill those roles include Mexican-based Alex Zendejas and three German-based players: Brenden Aaronson, Kevin Paredes and Gio Reyna, a versatile attacker who excelled in central midfield, scoring twice, against Ghana.

Berhalter recalled 20 players from last month’s camp, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/10/14/usmnt-germany-christian-pulisic/?itid=ap_stevengoff" target=_blank>which also included a 3-1 defeat to Germany</a> in East Hartford, Conn.

The newcomers are Belgian-based goalkeeper Gaga Slonina; Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, the first-choice left back who skipped last month’s camp because of an injury concern; Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Paxten Aaronson, Brenden’s younger brother; and PSV Eindhoven midfielder Malik Tillman, a late scratch last month because of injury.

Paxten Aaronson, 20, has not played for the U.S. team since January, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/01/28/usmnt-colombia-friendly/" target=_blank>when he debuted against Colombia</a>. He has made nine appearances for Frankfurt, two as a starter.

Zendejas, a right wing who replaced Tillman on the U.S. roster last month, has scored in four of his past six Liga MX matches for Club América.

Atlanta United center back Miles Robinson was the only player selected from MLS, which, beginning Monday, will pause the playoffs for two weeks while international matches are played around the world.

Midfielder Tyler Adams, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/12/02/tyler-adams-usmnt-world-cup/" target=_blank>the U.S. World Cup captain</a>, remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. He has not played for the national team since the World Cup.

Midfielders: Paxten Aaronson (Eintracht Frankfurt), Johnny Cardoso (Internacional), Luca de la Torre (Celta Vigo), Lennard Maloney (Heidenheim), Weston McKennie (Juventus), Yunus Musah (AC Milan), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund), Malik Tillman (PSV Eindhoven).
