Wednesday’s live updates: Election 2021

Republican Glenn Youngkin was projected to win Virginia’s governor’s race, defeating Democrat Terry McAuliffe in an upset certain to have repercussions for Democrats as they look ahead to next year’s midterm elections.

In his victory speech, Youngkin vowed to “change the trajectory of this commonwealth” on his first day in office, promising to invest in the education budget, “introduce choice” within the public school system, cut several taxes and fund law enforcement.

New York is projected to have elected Eric Adams (D) as the city’s second Black mayor, according to the Associated Press. The former police officer defeated Curtis Sliwa (R), founder of the Guardian Angels.
Also in New York, Democrat Alvin Bragg is projected to win the race for Manhattan district attorney, putting him charge of the criminal investigation into former president Donald Trump and his business dealings.
In Boston, Michelle Wu was projected to win the mayoral race and become the first Asian American mayor in the city’s history. Wu, 36, has served on the Boston City Council since 2014 and was president of the council from 2016 to 2018. She defeated fellow Democrat Annissa Essaibi George, 47, an at-large member of the council.
It’s an off-year for congressional elections, but three new members of Congress will officially or essentially be chosen in special elections. In Ohio, Democrat Shontel Brown was projected to win the special election for that state’s 11th Congressional District, and Republican Mike Carey was projected to win the 15th Congressional District. Voters in Florida’s 20th Congressional District were choosing their nominees.
The economy and jobs were the top issues for Virginia voters, according to network exit polling.
