Isaiah Kane has a wrenching decision to make: return to the packed Kohl’s warehouse where 15 colleagues have already tested positive for the coronavirus or give up what could be his only chance at steady pay until next year.

The 21-year-old took unpaid leave in early July with his managers’ approval after two co-workers fell ill with the virus. But once he was back, they made clear, it had to be for good because the holiday shopping season was already here.
