Bob Wilber, musician who kept the sound of early jazz alive, dies at 91

Bob Wilber, a clarinetist and saxophonist who was a protege of Sidney Bechet, one of the founding fathers of jazz, and who was a prominent figure in preserving early styles of jazz and swing music, died Aug. 4 at a care facility in Chipping Campden, England. He was 91.

The death was confirmed by his wife, singer Joanne “Pug” Horton, who did not cite a specific cause. Mr. Wilber, who was born in New York, had lived in Chipping Campden for more than 30 years.
