Joe Biden announced his candidacy with a rousing call to arms against the resurgence of white supremacy in America. He cited the “Klansmen and white supremacists” who marched in Charlottesville, and ripped President Trump for failing to unambiguously condemn them at a “defining moment for this nation.”

“We can’t forget what happened,” Biden said. Referencing our long struggle to align ourselves with our founding “ideals,” and casting the 2020 election as a referendum on whether we’ll abandon them, Biden declared: “We have to remember who we are.”
