Covid-19 latest updates White House pushes student vaccinations as hospital admissions, deaths rise about 40 percent in a week

Daily new cases, hospitalizations and deaths from the delta variant of the coronavirus are all surging as millions of Americans remain unvaccinated, federal health officials warned Thursday.

“Across the board, we are seeing increases in cases and hospitalizations in all age groups,” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky said at a White House coronavirus briefing where she and other health leaders reiterated pleas for people to get immunized.

Vaccine maker Novavax announced Thursday that it filed for emergency authorization of its vaccine, which was shown to be 90 percent effective, in India, Indonesia and the Philippines with its partner, Serum Institute of India. The company plans to seek clearance from the World Health Organization in August and from the United Kingdom regulator before the end of September. Novavax has agreed to supply 1.1 billion doses to low- and middle-income countries. In the United States, the company plans to seek a regulatory greenlight in the fourth quarter, a delay from previous timelines.

Larry Hogan (R) said state employees who work in congregate settings will have to get vaccinated by that date or wear face coverings and get tested.
More nursing homes are requiring vaccinations for their staff, to prevent a reprise of last year’s deadly surge of the virus in long-term care facilities.
