Three women were hospitalized Friday morning after what appeared to be a hit-and-run crash at Portland State University in downtown Portland, Ore., officials said.

The women suffered serious injuries and were all transported to hospitals by ambulances. Two of the injured women have serious, life-threatening injuries while a third is believed to be in fair condition, Portland Police Bureau officials said in a <a href="https://www.portlandoregon.gov/police/news/read.cfm?id=159116&amp;ec=1&amp;ch=twitter">news release</a> Friday.

The women were walking on the sidewalk in front of Portland State University’s Urban Center when the vehicle struck them at about 10:04 a.m., police said. Police said they think  a fourth person may have been injured as well.

Witnesses have told several news outlets that the vehicle — which they described as a blue, midsize SUV — jumped the curb, struck the women and sped off. Police said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/PortlandPolice/status/1000101006414237696">tweet</a> Friday afternoon that they were successfully able to track down a blue 2005 Mazda Tribute which they think was involved in the crash, and that there was no additional danger to the community.

One witness, Christopher Bond, told <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2018/05/multiple_casualties_in_downtow.html">the Oregonian</a> that after the vehicle struck the women, its driver went after him and gunned the motor. Bond described the driver as a male, though police have not released information to support that description.

Portland State University student Kat Caputo told the Associated Press that she was chatting with a friend when she noticed the chaotic scene. She said she saw two women lying on the sidewalk and another leaning against a brick wall. One of the women had a large bruise on her back and screamed when paramedics touched it, Caputo told the AP. She said she was relieved that she was running late, or else the vehicle might have struck her, too.

Isabela Juan told the Oregonian that she was on her way to the university’s library after a chemistry class when she came across paramedics putting one of the victims onto a gurney. Juan said the woman appeared to be unconscious and that half of her face was covered in blood. Another victim, she said, was screaming and crying, unable to walk.

An hour after the crash, what remained at the scene was a green sweater, a pair of sneakers, a pink slipper and a black bike glove, all on the sidewalk near a small splash of blood, the AP reported. Police said the area will probably be closed to all traffic for the next four to five hours as their investigation continues.

Portland State University officials said in a <a href="https://www.pdx.edu/">campus alert</a> that classes and events will resume as scheduled. It’s unclear whether the victims were students. Their names have not been released.

In a tweet Friday, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler thanked the first responders and those investigating the incident.

“My thoughts are with those injured in this morning’s hit-and-run,” he <a href="https://twitter.com/tedwheeler/status/1000091699169738752">wrote</a>. “We will provide more information as it becomes available.”
