Pamela Tiffin, a model-turned-actress who became known in the 1960s mostly for her roles in light comedies and farces before turning her back on Hollywood, died Dec. 2 at a New York City hospital. She was 78.

Her family announced the death in a statement. The cause was not disclosed.

In her late teens, Ms. Tiffin had a successful modeling career in New York, appearing in fashion magazines and myriad advertising campaigns. At 18, she went to Hollywood to visit friends and, according to well-worn lore, was spotted having lunch at the Paramount studio commissary. She was asked on the spot to audition for producer Hal B. Wallis.
