E.A. Carmean Jr., National Gallery’s founding curator of 20th-century art, dies at 74

E.A. Carmean Jr., who as the founding curator of 20th-century art at the National Gallery in Washington oversaw the early expansion of the museum’s collections beyond the old European masters to include the works of such modern masters as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, died Oct. 12 at his home in Washington. He was 74.
