A student and a teacher were injured in a shooting at a middle school in a suburb north of Indianapolis, and a student has been taken into custody in connection with the incident, police said.

Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt said at a late morning news conference that multiple police agencies responded to the Noblesville West Middle School after receiving a report of an active shooter at 9:06 a.m. Jowitt said both victims were rushed to local hospitals and that a male student was detained.

“We believe he is the involved suspect,” Jowitt said.

Jowitt said the school had been cleared and victims’ families were notified.

Fire and police officials did not detail the condition of the victims, but <a href="http://www.wishtv.com/news/crime-watch-8/report-multiple-shot-at-noblesville-school/1198338187">WISH TV in Indianapolis</a> reported that a 13-year-old student and the teacher were in critical condition. The station reported the teacher was shot while attempting to intervene in the shooting.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said there is no indication any other suspects were involved in the shooting.

WISH TV reported that students at the scene had heard several shots, but they weren’t sure whether they originated inside or outside the building.

Video showed squad cars surrounding the school and students being led to a bus across a parking lot, in the hours after the shooting.

Jowitt said a threat had also been made against Noblesville High School, but so far authorities had no indication it was anything more serious. He said there were no threats against other schools in the area.

Noblesville is about 25 miles north of Indianapolis and has a population of about 60,000. The shooting occurred one week after 10 people were killed at school in Santa Fe, Tex.

Police planned to hold a second update on the shooting at 2 p.m. Central Time.
