About this story
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court released a new congressional map in February that all but ensures Democrats will pick up several new U.S. House seats in November.
The seat vacated by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.) will be filled by a special election on March 13. The district represented by Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) will select his replacement on April 24. Republican Rep. Patrick J. Tiberi’s Ohio seat will be filled by a special election on Aug. 7. We have classified all three as Republican districts. The Michigan governor delayed a special election to replace Rep. John Conyers Jr. until November 2018 — the same day as the 2018 general election. We classify the seat as Democratic.
Democratic seat totals come from the American Presidency Project at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Election data are from Cook Political Report. The list of retiring legislators comes from Roll Call’s list of departing members and news reports.
