Hurricane Irma is so strong and its pressure is so low, it’s sucking water from shorelines into the core of the storm. The result is an extraordinary sight — and a tempting one for some Florida residents, who want to walk on new expanses of beach. Authorities are warning them to resist. The National Hurricane Center tweeted, using all capital letters: “MOVE AWAY FROM THE WATER!”
The wind will shift, and water levels will rise within minutes, the National Hurricane Center warned, flooding the coast with huge waves and 10 to 15 feet of water.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, police cleared the beach well before the storm was set to hit.
