Frankly, I think we are being unfair to the Senate version of the health-care bill. Too much time has already been spent on all the problems it creates — for the indigent, the pregnant, the elderly, those who depend on Medicaid. But what about the problems it <em>solves</em>?

We are taking those too lightly, I feel. The Affordable Care Act placed a great burden on a great many people, and the Senate bill seeks to relieve their sacrifice.

Think of the families teetering at the steep pinnacle of the income distribution, wondering whether their finances will stretch to cover a lifesaving surgery for their purebred dressage horse. Thanks to the tax breaks this bill offers, they can rest assured that Dick Whittington Lord Mare Of London will get a replacement knee and continue to dance merrily over the course.

This is not just a tax break for the wealthy. It may well be the difference between life and death for countless sports cars and golf tourneys across America. Before, their money was wasted on dialysis for strangers who might possibly not even understand the finer points of badminton. Now that money is being restored, and it will go where it is most needed.

A difference of a percentage point or three in the capital gains rate may not sound like much, but it can make a world of difference for a family struggling over whether they will be able to use “summer” as a verb this year.

In gated communities across America, families will no longer have to live in agony each and every day as they stare at a red wine stain on their snow leopard carpet, knowing that with the ACA, they are deprived of the discretionary income to buy a new one.

Think of the father who would have had to come home from a long day of watching his interest accrue and inform his 6-year-old son that he would have to use the same spoon for the soup course <em>and</em> the dessert. Think of the family wondering whether they will be able to scrape together enough money to bring Stacy’s plus-one to Wimbledon. Think of the mother who had to decide between a life-altering window treatment and her annual vacation to Nice. People who called the House bill “mean” do not recognize that the meanest thing of all would be denying people Nice.

After all, what if something happens to you, through no fault of your own? What if your polo mallet breaks? Now you need not worry that you will have to have your butler tape the mallet back together. You have enough money to replace it, easily, with a better one, made from the shin of an impoverished man.

Now, families need no longer fear that one FASHION EMERGENCY will be lifestyle-changing. If they arrive at the Met Gala and discover that someone else is wearing the same diamond-encrusted belt, they can send Archibald out to retrieve another one without fearing that this will exceed their annual diamond budget. This bill looks out for them.

A struggling family that needs costly medicines to complete Father’s collection of costly lifesaving medicines can sleep well, at last, not fearing that some of those medicines might be snatched up by people who would remove them from the original packaging and cause them to lose some of their value.

Families who wondered whether they could manage to add another member to their helicopter ranks, or whether they can afford that expensive but vital injection of fuel for their private jet can finally exhale.

The burden has been lifted from thousands of people wondering where on Earth their next meal of foie gras and caviar was coming from. Instead of deciding between iPhones and health care for other poorer people whom they do not know, they no longer have to make such an unpleasant choice.

This does not just benefit the 0.1 percent. It also gives vital succor to the 0.2 percent, who otherwise might have had to go without.

Families wondering whether this will have to be the year they end their annual tradition of the Most Dangerous Game need fear no longer. That is definitely happening.

People who say this bill does not relieve hardships have not considered all that it does for diamond-encrusted yachts, the hardest ships of all. Families in dire straits, such as those where yacht races occur, can look to this bill for succor. (“Succor” is what “aid” becomes once it passes into the correct income brackets.) Other families are in straits, metaphorically, but families in yachts often find themselves in straits, literally. Who will look out for them?

Breathing room — that’s what this bill offers. More for some. None at all for others.
