Watch witnesses rescue man who fell onto subway tracks

April 6, 2017 at 5:27 p.m. EDT

An early-morning commute in Atlanta turned into a frantic rescue effort after a man fell onto subway train tracks Thursday morning.

Video from a bystander on the opposite platform shows several passengers working in tandem to hoist the man to safety. Two men jump onto the tracks and lift him up by his arms and legs, while two other people stand on the platform and pull him up by his arms. As soon as the man is lifted onto the platform, three police officers arrive.

The scene unfolded at Five Points in downtown Atlanta, one of the busiest subway stations in the city. The injured man, who appeared to be holding a white walking cane, yelled out that his leg was broken, as other people sprang into action. White canes are often used by people who are visually impaired and the National Federation of the Blind offers a free white cane program.

Daniel Summers, who is wearing an orange shirt in the video, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he knew he “had to do something fast” and immediately jumped onto the tracks. “Several MARTA police arrived moments later and pulled both me and the other bystander out from the tracks,” he said.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital with an ankle or leg injury, according to the Associated Press.

“Every day we’re presented with opportunities to lend a hand and be compassionate to one another,” said Summers. “This was one of those times, and I’m just glad I was able to help.”
