By now, most students aiming to enter selective colleges this fall have sent in their applications. Some who applied early are in and done. Others must wait until late March or early April.

Note that there are essentially three types of applications: early decision (ED), in which students must commit to enrolling if admitted; early action (EA), in which admitted students are allowed to weigh other offers until the spring; and regular, in which students get offers in the spring. Some colleges do not have ED or EA programs.
