FORECAST IN DETAIL

As long as you didn’t have beach plans this Labor Day weekend, it’s turning out to be pretty fantastic! Temperatures topping out near 80, a nice breeze and spectacular sunsets are a far cry from the lashing wind and surf along the coast, although we can’t rule out a few showers mainly east of Washington and Interstate 95. Next up? A warming trend toward midweek, with a few more 90s to add to the count this summer before we can start truly thinking about a change in season.

Today (Sunday): A steady and sometimes gusty breeze is about the only sign here in the Washington area that Hermine is sitting and spinning off the coast. Most of the day should be variably cloudy, breezy and pleasant, with only a slight chance of a shower toward the Chesapeake Bay and in Southern Maryland. Highs reach the upper 70s to low 80s, and we’ll still be enjoying a nice breeze from the northeast at 10 to 15 mph, occasionally gusting 20 to 30 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: The evening and overnight carry a little better chance of some showers, mainly for eastern areas, as Hermine gets closer to the coast. We’ll call it a 50 percent chance for showers east of the city and I-95, and only a 20 to 30 percent from D.C./I-95 toward points west. Otherwise, overnight conditions are partly to mostly cloudy and breezy, with northeast winds at 10 to 20 mph and gusts over 20 mph. Overnight lows slide back to the low-to-mid 60s. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Labor Day): A few isolated morning showers are possible, as Hermine continues to spin off the coast. Most of the holiday, though, is partly cloudy and rather nice. Highs should manage the low-to-mid 80s, but we’ll hang on to that steady wind from the north, around 10 to 20 mph with gusts of 20 to 30 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Skies continue partly cloudy as Hermine starts to sneak a little farther to the north-northeast. Humidity levels edge a bit higher, which means warmer lows in the mid-60s to near 70, with a lighter breeze from the north. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

We trend mostly sunny and noticeably warmer for Tuesday and Wednesday, as Hermine drifts further up the coast. So keep the hoodies in the closet and the shades handy, as summer’s not quite done with us yet. Highs climb to the upper 80s to low 90s with more noticeable humidity rising toward the moderate range. Overnights feature mostly clear skies and muggier lows in the low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: Medium
