FORECAST IN DETAIL

Try to keep the upcoming weekend in your thoughts as you shiver through today’s wind enhanced chill. A potent warm front struggles tomorrow but helps us flirt with the 60 degree mark by Saturday and possibly Sunday as well. Try not to focus on next week’s storm as it most likely will disappoint snow lovers and cold rains will prolong the wait for spring for those more warmly inclined.

Today (Thursday): Clouds are a rarity today but only because strong high pressure lumbers in and puts the lid on any warm up despite all the sunshine. Despite the noticeably longer days, highs do no better than mid-to-upper 30s. Those cold readings are accentuated by a wind out of the north at 10-15 mph. Confidence: High

Tonight: The clear skies allow full view of the waxing moon rising high in the sky in the evening. It is better viewed inside though as lows fall to the low-to-mid 20s. One consolation; the winds die down during the evening. Confidence:

Tomorrow (Friday): Morning clouds could be fairly extensive. These mark the warm front moving across the region as do light breezes coming from the south. The only problem is the surface cold air is difficult to dislodge from the area. Even with slow clearing in the afternoon, highs still only manage the low-to-mid 40s. A marked improvement on the day before but still several degrees below normal. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Light southwest winds keep up through the night under partly cloudy skies. They help considerably in keeping the drop in temperatures a slow one. Lows hold in the mid-to-upper 30s allowing most to avoid early morning car window scraping. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Saturday is bright with sun and with the steady warm up through the day is bright with smiles as well. Highs push into the upper 50s and lower 60s for a warm day that has been a rarity this month. Westerly breezes continue into the night and help to keep temperatures up with lows in the low-to-mid 40s. Confidence: Medium-High

A quick moving low crossing the Midwest early Sunday threatens to bring in just enough clouds to hold highs in the mid-to-upper 50s. If the clouds are broken enough lower 60s remain possible. This little storm could be potent enough to produce a few light showers in the late afternoon/early evening. A mostly cloudy night helps to keep lows in the low-to-mid 40s despite cooler air sneaking back in behind the showers. Confidence: Medium

Monday has clearing skies but enough cooler air pushing in behind the storm – producing snow up in New England – to hold highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Confidence: Medium

SNOW POTENTIAL INDEX
A daily assessment of the potential for at least 1 inch of snow in the next week, on a 0-10 scale.

2/10 (→): A storm in the middle of next week has limited cold air to work with but could well be strong enough to make at least brief snow possible.
