Twinbrook to Shady Grove

Continuous single-tracking between Shady Grove and Twinbrook. Reduced service at Shady Grove and Rockville. On Saturday, August 20, and Sunday, August 21, free shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains between Grosvenor and Shady Grove to complete necessary switch rehabilitation work. As a result, White Flint, Twinbrook, Rockville and Shady Grove stations will be closed.

National Airport to Braddock

West Falls Church to Vienna

  • Advice from Metro: A shuttle train will operate between Vienna and West Falls Church every 24 minutes (regularly every 6 minutes during rush hour) and riders will transfer at West Falls Church to continue trip. Consider alternatives to the Vienna and Dunn Loring stations.

NoMa to Ft. Totten

Single-tracking will begin between Friendship Heights and Medical Center at 8 p.m. each night from Jan. 2 to March 7, except inauguration week. While not a "surge project," this will affect evening Red Line riders.

Weeknight work: Maintenance crews will start at 8 p.m.

Early close on weekends: The system will close at midnight on Friday and Saturday nights as opposed to 3 a.m. beginning June 3.

Most of the work will be repairing and replacing equipment such as tunnel lighting, third-rail cables, boots and cover boards, emergency signs, ventilation and fans, insulators, fasteners, rail ties and radio and cellular systems. In addition, debris will be cleared and tunnels will be cleaned.

  • Most Safety Surges will have 40 buses dedicated to providing alternate service.
  • Additional 8-car trains will run on lines where capacity is reduced.
  • Additional customer support staff will be present at some stations.
  • Extra trains and personnel will be strategically placed to respond quickly to issues.
