DURHAM — The debate highlighted a divide between Clinton and Sanders on the death penalty.
Asked if she still supports it, Clinton said: “Yes, I do.”
She added that states should be required to maintain the highest evidentiary standards and other safeguards, but she said capital punishment is appropriate for those like Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.
Sanders said he understands those sentiments, but said he disagrees.
“In a world of so much of violence and killing, I just don’t believe that government should be part of the killing,” he said.
