If you’re shopping around for a new cellphone case, listen up, because the police have a small request. They’d appreciate it if you didn’t buy one that looks like a firearm.

“If I were a cop and it was dark and I saw this (case) on a person, my first thought would be to pull my gun and defuse the threat,” Tony Herbert, a community activist in Brooklyn, said at a news conference on Tuesday, according to the New York Daily News.

Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, told reporters: “The money that is earned from the sale of this case is blood money earned from the blood of the person who is foolish enough to carry it.”

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office in New Jersey has also issued a warning about the case, saying on Facebook that it was “not a cool product or a good idea.” By mid-day Friday, the post had been shared more than 13,000 times.

“A police officers job is hard enough, without having to make a split second decision in the dark of night when someone decides without thinking to pull this out while stopped for a motor vehicle violation,” the office wrote on Facebook.

There haven’t been any specific problems or issues to prompt this note of caution from the prosecutor’s office, a spokesman told the Philadelphia Inquirer, but there had been some chatter about it.

According to the newspaper:

Spokesman Al Della Fave said the cases haven’t triggered any incidents yet, but several law enforcement officials had expressed concerns with the product.
“The first thing you notice is the realistic butt of the weapon and the trigger guard,” he said. “And most kids … carry their cellphones in their back pocket, and if they were to reach back for it, to pull it out to make a call, it’s the same motion as someone pulling a concealed weapon.”
Della Fave said local police have had similar concerns with products that resemble or conceal weapons.
“It’s just an accident waiting to happen,” Fave said.

This type of case is for sale on eBay, as well as on this Web site, where it’s sold for $49.

The product description reads:

More a piece of equipment than a regular “cover,” the Gun Grip Case transforms your iPhone 5 into a handgun! Available in black, white or pink, this fake “pistol” works with an app so you can interact with a digital version of the gun in the same color on your iPhone 5 screen. The app means you can play games of Russian Roulette at parties! Don’t worry, you can’t actually shoot anyone!

(Caption: This faux gun cellphone case has been making its rounds on the Internet. It’s a terrible idea, and it’s very dangerous. We strongly recommend that you do not use this product.)
